HowTo Create An Inbox Email Rule To Filter Spam

If you subscribe to our Spam Filtering service (called DoubleCheck or WebIowaPlus), you may want to want to create a rule in your email program to filter messages which have been tagged as Spam and sort them into a separate folder. This example will use the Outlook Express email program, but the process will be similar for most email programs. This rule will keep the potentially time-wasting or offensive emails out of our way, while giving you a chance to review them later to ensure that good email did not get marked as Spam accidentally.

LEARNING POINT: Spam is a slang term. It is defined as "Unsolicited Commercial Email".
With Outlook Express open, click the TOOLS menu then click "MESSAGE RULES" then "MAIL".

LEARNING POINT: The spam filtering product we use is called DoubleCheck. DoubleCheck measures and scores every email message using over 800 different rules. DoubleCheck has a 98% or higher accuracy rating for correctly identifying spam. DoubleCheck also analyzes every message to assure it does not contain viruses.

A new window will appear. In section number 1, select WHERE THE SUBJECT LINE CONTAINS SPECIFIC WORDS.

LEARNING POINT: Before DoubleCheck begins scoring each message, it checks several lists of "known spam senders" If a message has been sent from an address on these lists it is immediately discarded (Real Time Blacklist-RBL). If message passes the RBL phase it is measured against DoubleCheck's spam rules. Whenever a message scores 6.0 or higher it is "tagged as spam" and labeled with its score, then delivered to your email account.

In section number 3, click on CONTAINS SPECIFIC WORDS.
In the window that appears type this string (without the quotation marks) "[SPAM-".
Click the ADD button on the right-hand side. Then click on the OK button at the bottom.
In section number 2, click on MOVE IT TO THE SPECIFIED FOLDER.
In section number 3, click on the blue underlined word SPECIFIED.
Click on LOCAL FOLDERS in the large window. Then click on the NEW FOLDER button. You'll  want to create a folder where these spam messages can be stored.
Type in the word SPAM (this will be the name of the new folder) and click the OK button.
You will now see a new folder named SPAM in the large window.
Click the OK button. Click the OK button again. You should get a SUCCESS message.
Click the OK button.
Now, any future emails you receive which have been tagged by DoubleCheck as Spam, will automatically be sent to the Spam folder you created.
You will know there are new messages in the Spam folder, when the folder name "Spam" turns bold (E.G. Spam)
To review the messages in your Spam folder, click once on the Spam folder in the left-hand pane.
Click on the INBOX (left-hand side) to return to your regular email window.

LEARNING POINT:
If you ever find that you regularly receive email tagged as spam that should not be, you may email us with the sender’s address, requesting that we “whitelist” this sender. (Do not forward the email, because it will wind up in OUR spam folder) We will review your request, and in most cases add the sender to a whitelist. This will assure that future messages are not tagged incorrectly. Send requests to support@webiowa.net.
