How to ftp to your personal website!
Personal Web Space:
You can have your own personal web page on the Webiowa.net web servers. All you need to do is create your web page (not covered in this How To) and then FTP (File Transfer Protocol) your web pages to ftp.webiowa.net.

Personal web space is only for Webiowa.net customers and is only for non-commercial use. If you need a web site for commercial purposes, please feel free view our hosting packages for details.

To transfer your web pages to the webiowa.net web server, you will need an FTP program. There are several available for free or inexpensively. The one that will be used in this How To is WSFTP. It doesn’t matter if your are a webiowa.net or webiowaplus.net user. Webiowa.net is used by both customers to serve up personal web pages.

You will need to contact webiowa.net and advise them that you desire to use your personal web space. Your personal web site URL will be http://www.webiowa.net/YOUR-USERNAME. If your username is sampale, then your URL would be, http://www.webiowa.net/sampale. You will be given a separate username and password for FTP purposes. This FTP username and password is different from your email username and password or your dialup username and password.

Open your FTP program. Most FTP programs allow you to save the information needed to connect to a site in an address book. This way you do not have to enter the information in each type you want to transfer (FTP) files to that location. Start your FTP program and look for the LOCATIONS or ADDRESS BOOK. In WS FTP it is called SITES, available from the drop down menus.

In WS FTP Pro we are going to click on Create Site.

We give the site a friendly name, one that is descriptive and easily identifies the location.
Click the NEXT button.
Now we type in the name of the server we want to connect to. In this case it is ftp.webiowa.net.
We could click on the FINISH button; however, we want to add our login information for this site. So we do not get prompted every-time we connect for our username and password.
Click the NEXT button.
When you requested your personal web space, you were given an FTP Username and password. The user name is entered in the User ID field, it is in the same format as an email address. E.G username@webiowa.net. The password was provided at that same time. Type this information in the appropriate fields, click on the SAVE PASSWORD option.
We can now click FINISH.
We are returned to the screen where we started.
Once our site information has been saved. We are ready to connect to the web server to upload (Transfer) our web pages from our computer to the web server.
For the web server to automatically load your webpage when a visitor goes to your site (http://www.webiowa.net/your-username). The main web page should be named index.htm or index.html
We are going to transfer from our computer to the web server an index.html file, then view that web page from our computer.
In WS FTP, in the left-hand window, we need to navigate, that is, find our way to the index.html file we have created on our computer. This is the file that we want to upload to the web server.

By double clicking on the Green Up Arrow in the upper left-hand corner, then doubles clicking on the directories listed just below, we work our way to the My Documents directory where our INDEX.HTML file exists.

Now we can click on the CONNECT button located in the bottom left-hand corner.

After a few seconds, we should see the window change on the right-hand side. Also, the lower center window is our status window. It tells us if we successfully connected and what our ‘current’ remote directory is. A local directory is on our computer; the remote directory is on the Webiowa.net web server.

To upload the index.html file from our computer on the left-hand side to the web server on the right-hand side, click once on the index.html file in the left-hand window.

This selects the file we want to work with. Next, click on the Green arrow pointing to the right (towards the web server).

After a few seconds, you will see the index.html file listed in the right-hand window. This means that the file has been uploaded to the web server. Also, notice that the bottom center Status windows reports that the file has transferred successfully (Transfer Succeeded). When finished, click the DISCONNECT button.

Using our web browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape Communicator, etc), lets go to our personal web page! Open your web browser and type in the URL to your personal web page.
http://www.webiowa.net/YOUR-USERNAME
